“The school should become the place where the child may live in freedom, and this freedom must not be solely the intimate, spiritual liberty of internal growth.  The entire organism of the child, from his physiological, vegetative part of his motor activity, ought to find in school ‘the best conditions for development’”
(111, The Advanced Montessori Method I, Clio).

Education for Life

Montessori is an educational method designed to meet the needs of the life of the growing child.  Montessori Education is an established methodology in which trained adults aid the child as he grows and develops.  Montessori Environments promote self-development allowing the child to function as independently as possible.

Montessori education is not a causative education.  It is based upon psychological and physical characteristics of development.  The child goes through four distinctive planes of development.  The four planes of development can be defined as such as
  1. Infancy, 0-6 years of age
  2. Childhood, 6-12 years of age
  3. Adolescence, 12-18 years of age
  4. Maturity, 18-24 years of age

A Montessori Environment Provides:

  • the recognition of work as an anthropological necessity.
  • mixed ages mirroring the larger society.
  • an environment free of competition.
  • mutual learning.
  • a psychological environment for the child.
  • freedom:  freedom to move, freedom to speak, freedom to socialize, freedom to choose work, and freedom to be.
  • the recognition that freedom comes with responsibility.

An Education to Meet the Rhythm of Life

Montessori Environments contain scientifically designed materials that are attractive to the child yet serve a developmental need.  Presentations using the materials are given at the appropriate time in a child's life aiding his developmental processes.  As the materials are self-correcting, they allow the child to build his independence.
